Online backup software and tools are a great way to get the most out of the online backup procedure. There are various tools which allow a user to make very simple and effective backups.

Automatic backup tools
This is a very popular tool which runs automatically and makes sure that any changes made to files and data are backed up. This decreases the likelihood of losing any information as the latest file is always backed up.

Scheduled backup
This allows the user to set a specific time and date that they want their files to be backed up. This is often done when the system is least likely to be used to make sure that the most up to date information is backed up. It also means that the systems performance won’t be affected as badly as it will be one of the few processes running.

Automatic synchronising
This allows the backup process to be more specific which will make sure that only selected files are backed up. This process will often include the scheduled backup option.

Encryption
This is a built in tool which makes sure that the data sent over the internet is encrypted. There are two main types of encryption for the online backup process:

• Transfer Encryption
  This method makes sure that the backup information sent over the internet is encrypted. This type of encryption does not always mean that the data will be encrypted while it is being stored.
  
  
• End to end encryption
  This is where the encryption takes place at the clients end to make sure that all of the information is encrypted whilst being transferred and during storage. This is achieved by the client generating their own encryption key. The disadvantage of this is if the key is lost then the data won’t be accessible.
  
  

Opened file backup
This tool allows for the backup of files which are regularly left open for long periods of time such as outlook files and SQL database files. The major benefit of this is that full backups can be made at anytime.
